The Sensitive Surface, 2021
earth on canvas,
8 x 6 feet
The Sensitive Surface is a large monochromatic landscape painting made with earth from the forest floor of so-called Stanley Park. For Parkas, the land holds its history like an archive. This sensitive surface offers the promise of Yves Klein’s immaterial void of the sky while simultaneously presenting the very material substance of the ground.
The work was presented by Supercharged, the School for Contemporary Art’s 2021 BFA graduating exhibition at Simon Fraser University, the Audain Gallery.
“The artists in the exhibition respond to a palpable charge in the air that is present in the current state of our world as we emerge from various levels of lock-down.”
